Since Lorraine Grillo was appointed President & CEO in 2010, the SCA has successfully completed over $20 billion of construction, producing over 70,000 new school seats and completing thousands of capital improvement projects. Lorraine led the SCA to find innovative ways to relieve school overcrowding, including developing strong public/private partnerships with major developers. She met the challenge of quickly reopening 71 schools damaged by Hurricane Sandy and in 2015, she realized the Mayor’s commitment to Universal Pre-K by building and opening 35 Universal Pre-K Centers. Throughout her career, she has been a tireless advocate for the MWLBE community, continuing to build the SCA’s reputation for the best MWBE program in NY State. In July 2018, Mayor Bill de Blasio appointed Lorraine to also serve as Commissioner of the Department of Design and Construction (DDC), which manages the design and construction of public buildings and infrastructure projects for 29 client agencies.
E. Bruce Barrett served 17 years as the SCA Vice President of Architecture and Engineering. She was responsible for a department of over 270 members in four studios: In-house Design, Design Consultant Management, Technical Standards & Support, and Operations. During her tenure Ms. Barrett oversaw the design of over 7,800 capital improvement projects to existing schools and more than 320 new schools and additions that provided over 139,000 additional classroom seats throughout New York City. Ms. Barrett’s passion for innovation and steadfast commitment to sustainability culminated in the design of the first net-zero-energy school building in New York City, and one of the first of its kind worldwide. Additionally, she led efforts to improve sustainability measures not only in new building designs, but also in the construction and operation of new school buildings and in the design of capital improvement projects modernizing and renovating older school buildings.
