Join us for a video presentation about the life and work of Yona Friedman, followed by a discussion with Kenneth Frampton. Sylvie Boulanger, Director of Cneai, and Nicholas Vargelis, Visual Arts Coordinator of Le Petit Versailles will introduce the videos and their work on the Museums Without Building project with a video presentation. The videos will delve into Friedman’s pictograms, an ideographic writing system composed of small, simple drawings to evoke meaning regardless of language. Frampton will then discuss his time as the Technical Editor of the magazine Architectural Design, when he would frequently visit Friedman in Paris. A second workshop, Museums Without Buildings, will take place the following day on Saturday, June 22, led by the team at Cneai= Paris.

Speakers:
Kenneth Frampton, Ware Professor of Architecture, Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation

Sylvie Boulanger, Director of Cneai= Paris

Nicholas Vargelis, Visual Arts Coordinator, Le Petit Versailles

Kenneth Frampton (born 1930) trained as an architect at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London. He has worked as an architect and as an architectural historian and critic, and is now Ware Professor at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Columbia University, New York. He has taught at a number of leading institutions in the field, including the Royal College of Art in London, the ETH in Zurich, the Berlage Institute in Amsterdam, EPFL in Lausanne and the Accademia di Architettura in Medrisio. Frampton is the author of numerous essays on modern and contemporary architecture, and has served on many international juries for architectural awards and building commissions. In addition to Modern Architecture: A Critical History, his publications include Studies in Tectonic Culture, Labour, Work and Architecture, and A Genealogy of Modern Architecture: Comparative Critical Analysis of Built Form. He was the recipient of the 2018 Venice Biennale Leone d’ora.

Yona Friedman (born 1923) is a Hungarian-born French architect. Starting in 1958 with his manifesto Mobile Architecture (L’ Architecture Mobile), he has formulated and championed the idea that the inhabitant should be the sole conceptor of his own living premises. His theories influenced avant-garde groups like the Japanese Metabolists, Archigram, and many more. Friedman’s drawings and models are part of the permanent collections of the MoMA in NYC, the Pompidou Center in Paris, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the MAXXI in Rome and the Getty Institute in Los Angeles which holds his original archives. He has taught at MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, UCLA, Berkeley, and other institutions. Friedman also works for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), through which he publishes reports such as No Cost Housing and Survival Techniques (1977). In the early 1980s, he founded the Communication Centre of Scientific Knowledge for Self-Reliance, which is part of the United Nations University in Paris. At the age of 96, he continues to create, inspire and teach a new generation of researchers and architects.
