A Tour of Moynihan Train Hall Under Construction

Join SOM’s senior designers on a hardhat construction tourof the monumental civic project to convert McKim, Mead & White’s 1913 Beaux-Arts James A. Farley Post Office into a 21st-century train station. Situated across Eighth Avenue from Pennsylvania Station, the new Daniel Patrick Moynihan Train Hall will be a critical part of the redevelopment of the Penn Station complex, and will anchor the burgeoning development of Manhattan’s Far West Side, creating a public space that offers a tangible link to New York’s grand history while adding much-needed capacity to the region’s rail system.

New York’s original Pennsylvania Station came to symbolize the lost grandeur of rail travel and public space in the United States after its demolition in 1963. With SOM’s design for a light-filled atrium in the Farley Post Office building, the new Moynihan Train Hall will reestablish this sense of civic monumentality. Shrouded during World War II, the vast space at the center of the historic building, which once served as the Post Office’s mail sorting room, will be restored to its original sky-lit state. An iconic new skylight will enclose the new boarding concourse, arching up from massive original steel trusses that span the internal courtyard. Melding old and new, SOM’s design establishes a grand civic space that celebrates the unique history of the Farley Building while evoking the vaulted concourse of the original Penn Station.

Jon Cicconi is an Associate Director in SOM’s New York Office. He is the Senior Designer for the Moynihan Train Hall, along with many other complex projects in the U.S. and around the world. In his 12 years at SOM, Cicconi has helped shape some of SOM’s most dynamic and influential projects, including The University Center at the New School, Denver Union Station, P.S. 62 (New York City’s first net-zero-energy school), the Al Ahmadi Cultural Center in Kuwait, and All Aboard Florida’s three-passenger rail stations. Cicconi holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree from the University of Virginia and a Master of Architecture degree from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design.

Frank Mahan is an Associate Director at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. He is the Senior Designer of the Farley Building Private Development, part of the transformation of the historic Farley Post Office into the new Moynihan Train Hall. Since joining SOM in 2008, Mahan has worked on a variety of historic landmark, adaptive reuse, and renovation projects across the United States. His recent project experience includes adaptive reuse work at SOM’s midcentury U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado, as well as 510 Fifth Avenue and 28 Liberty in New York, the renovation and preservation of the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan, and the transformation of 388 Greenwich Street into Citi’s global headquarters. Mahan is SOM’s firmwide Adaptive Reuse Practice coordinator.
