More and more women are slowly ascending to top positions at established firms in design, development, and construction. Some of those who have ascended then take the leap to start their own businesses.

What are the keys to their professional successes, then and now? What motivated them to go out on their own? How are they mentoring the next generation of future leaders? Please join the AIANY Global Dialogues Committee for the sixth-annual Leaning Out event, as we meet some of these extraordinary professionals and learn more about how they have successfully struck out on their own.

About the Series

Leaning Out was initiated in 2013 as a panel on and by women in the fields of architecture and construction. As part of the AIANY Global Dialogues Committee series of panels, each year’s topic reflects the Global Dialogues theme of the year. In turn, topics such as Global Practice, Identity and Profile, Education, Landscape Architecture, Academic Leadership, and Entrepreneurship, have been discussed by highly accomplished women in this field within a format that begins with presentations and is completed with a moderated panel discussion. Over 180 people attend the panel each year to listen to four or five panelists selected for their achievements in the field and ability to inspire generations to come. Leaning Out was initiated by Hana Kassem, AIA, Principal, KPF.

About the Speakers

Erleen Hatfield, PE, AIA, is the Managing Partner of the Hatfield Group, a multi-disciplinary engineering consulting firm based in New York. She has over 25 years of experience in the design of complex structures worldwide. She sits on numerous industry boards and teaches at the Yale University School of Architecture. She is a both a licensed engineer and architect. Hatfield Group focuses on synthesis of engineering and architecture, putting client value first, and uses bespoke engineering design to achieve clients’ goals. Recent experience includes the Mercedes Benz retractable roof stadium, the new home for the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, The Tower at PNC, and the Green House, a multi-family residential building in New York City.

Wendy Evans Joseph, FAIA, LEED AP, is the founder of Studio Joseph, an architecture and exhibition design firm based in New York City. Studio Joseph has completed a diverse array of public, institutional, and cultural projects with a firm commitment to museum culture and community learning. Joseph received the Rome Prize in Architecture from the American Academy in Rome and is an Academician of the National Academy of Design. As an active participant in professional leadership, she was the president of the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, chairman of the AIA National Committee of Design, and president of the Architectural League of New York. Before founding Studio Joseph, Joseph had a distinguished 12-year tenure at Pei Cobb Freed & Partners where she was a designer for large-scale projects. She has a BA from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Master in Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Nnenna Lynch is the Founder & CEO of Xylem LLC, a newly launched venture that preserves workforce housing and develops residential, commercial and mixed use projects in transitioning neighborhoods with special attention to design, energy efficiency, as well as tenant and community well-being. Previously, Lynch was Managing Principal and Head of Development at The Georgetown Company (TGC), a privately held real estate investment and development company. Prior, Lynch served as a Senior Advisor to Mayor Michael Bloomberg for six years. She is a Trustee of Villanova University, a board member of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), the New York Road Runners club, the Association of American Rhodes Scholars and a member of the Robin Hood Foundation’s Housing Advisory Board.

Audrey Matlock leads Audrey Matlock Architect, a NYC-based firm committed to fusing architecture, technology, landscape, and contemporary culture. She is especially focused on the visual and performance possibilities of combining inventive engineering with architecture in the design of buildings. An active member of the architectural community, Matlock participates on design juries and panels, and lectures and teaches regularly throughout the U.S. and abroad. Matlock was recognized as an Emerging Voice by the Architectural League, has served as the AIA New York Co-VP for Design Excellence, Chair of the AIA New York Design Awards Committee, and is a Peer for the GSA. Her firm has won over 60 design awards and she was recently named by The New York Times as one of the twelve architects whose buildings are shaping New York today.

Susi Yu is a Managing Director and the Head of Development at L&LMAG. Previously, Susi served as EVP of Development for Forest City Ratner Companies leading the Residential Development team on execution of Pacific Park Brooklyn. Susi has been with Forest City since 2001, except for a 20-month stint from 2013-2015 with the Howard Hughes Corporation (HHC) as Senior Vice President of Development. Prior to HHC, Susi spent 12.5 years at Forest City Ratner Companies leading the development of large scale, mixed-use urban projects such as 8 Spruce Street by Frank Gehry. Trained as an architect at the University of Virginia’s School of Architecture, Susi previously worked for 10 years as an architect, most recently as a Project Architect for Robert A.M. Stern. Susi also serves on an advisory board of the Goldman Family, is a director of Apple Bank and YMCA’s Real Estate Committee.
