The graduate program in Urban Design, led by Distinguished Professor Michael Sorkin, is focused on creating new, equitable, beautiful, and sustainable forms and technologies for the city and urban life. Committed to both experiment and amelioration, the two-semester program focuses each year on a New York City site and, after a research visit, on design of a city in a demanding environment abroad.

Believing that there is no grand, unified discourse of the urban, the program offers wide opportunities to engage the unparalleled resources of City University and the City of New York, providing a rich variety of critical perspectives on urbanism.

Applicants to the Urban Design programs should hold a professional degree in either architecture or landscape architecture. Applicants from other backgrounds will be considered only in exceptional circumstances and on demonstration of a high level of design ability.

The program is designed to be completed in two full-time, sequential semesters. At the core of the curriculum is the design studio taught by the program director. This intensely engages a sequence of problems ranging from abstract studies to work on a large New York City site to a project in an interestingly stressed city elsewhere, visited during the semester break.

The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture is deeply committed to creating a just, sustainable, and imaginative future for a rapidly urbanizing planet. Through innovative research and interdisciplinary collaboration, the degree programs in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, and Sustainability in the Urban Environment seek to educate a diverse student body to become engaged professionals, both reflecting and enriching the complex communities of local and global environments. The School acts in the spirit of the City College of New York’s historic Ephebic Oath: “To transmit the city, not only not less, but greater, better, and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.”
