Please join the AIANY Women in Architecture Committee and LMNOP (Leadership, Mentoring, Networking & Opportunities for A&D Professionals) for a special Architecture Design Presentation at the Shaw Contract Showroom.
This talk will focus on two leading women designers, Hana Kassem and Marianne Kwok, who both have achieved an admirable career at Kohn Pederson Fox. Each of them will share with us their experience as design leaders on large-scale projects and will describe their design inspiration and process. They will also talk about the challenges they faced and how their design decisions have impacted the delivery of creative solutions and, by turns, have achieved positive results. They will also highlight their major design accomplishments.

Hana Kassem
Since joining KPF in 2001, Hana Kassem, AIA LEED AP, has led the design of a variety of academic, research, cultural, transportation, hospitality, and commercial mixed use projects in the United States, Europe, Asia, South America and the Middle East. Her design philosophy lies in the idea that design should fulfill social needs, creating dynamic, resilient and stimulating environments.
Some of her notable projects in the US include, the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center in Harlem, awarded an AIA NYS Design Award and the Red Hook Houses Resiliency and Recovery Project in Brooklyn, awarded both AIA NY and AIA Brooklyn Urban Planning Awards. Earlier projects include the Chapman Graduate School of Business at FIU in Miami, awarded the Chicago Athaneum Design Excellence Award. In China, she led the design of the Shanghai American Center, comprised of six office towers 80 to 120 meters tall – developed alongside founding Principal Bill Pedersen – six residential towers and a large retail complex totaling 4.2M sqm. Also in China, she is currently working on the officials’ village for the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, a very large project that includes a hotel, office building, retail components as well as residential towers.
A Registered Architect in the State of New York, she is an active member of the AIA. Hana served three consecutive years as Co-chair for the AIANY Global Dialogues Committee, during which time she initiated the Leaning Out panel discussion series, now in its 6th year, focused on Women in the field of Architecture and Construction. Through an AIANY Excellence Grant, she co-edit the book Architect d.b.a. Hana also serves on the Van Alen Institute Board of Directors and teaches part-time at Parsons.
Prior to joining KPF, she worked for a number of years in the office of the Pritzker Prize-awarded architect, Alvaro Siza, in Portugal, and at Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects in New York City. She was awarded her graduating RISD class’ Henry Adams AIA Gold Medal for Design Excellence.
Marianne Kwok
Marianne Kwok, has more than 25 years of professional experience in architectural design for a variety of built commercial, residential, and cultural facilities in Asia, North America, and Europe. Since joining KPF in 1994, she has been the Senior Designer for some to the firm’s most high-profile projects, including numerous corporate headquarters, mixed-use commercial developments, and master planning projects.
Most recently Marianne has been the Design Director, working alongside KPF founding Design Principal Bill Pedersen, on Hudson Yards, a 26-acre, 13-million-square-foot mixed-use development on Manhattan’s far west side that features Class-A office towers, residential, retail, cultural and educational facilities. Hudson Yards will be a defining presence on the New York City skyline, with KPF’s two dramatic, angled 52- and 80-story commercial office towers.
Marianne also led the design of the TP Link Headquarters in Shenzhen, a 700,000-square-foot headquarters office and research facility as well as and for the renovation of the Samsung Headquarters and the Rodin Pavilion in Seoul, Korea, whose design was honored with awards by the American Institute of Architects and the Chicago Athenaeum. Other projects include the headquarters in London of Clifford Chance, KPMG, Fitch Ratings and State Street Bank, all at Canary Wharf. Mixed use residential projects are the multi-award winnning One Shenzhen Bay in Shenzhen and 28 Chidlom in Bangkok.
Marianne received her Master of Architecture degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and her Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cornell University, where she was the recipient of the Charles Goodwin Sands Memorial Silver Meda and where she has taught an option studio. Marianne has been invited on reviews at Yale and Harvard and has also participated in the AIA Triangle connections earlier this year.
