NYC Waterfront Zoning 25th Anniversary Boat Tour: Accessing the Edge

In 1993, New York City established Waterfront Zoning, requiring that public access along the waterfront be provided as sites were redeveloped for higher density residential, commercial, and mixed use developments.

In the 25 years since, Waterfront Zoning and the city’s own investments have opened up significant segments of the City’s waterfront. This tour, an adaptation of AIANY’s Lower Manhattan Architecture Boat Tour, will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Waterfront Zoning and feature special guest speakers Claudia Herasme and Michael Marrella from the NYC Department of City Planning, who will highlight several sites that were developed pursuant to Waterfront Zoning.

The tour will follow the AIANY’s Lower Manhattan Boat Tour route, pausing for deeper insights at key public waterfront sites. Arthur Platt, the AIANY Host Guide, will fill in relevant architecture and infrastructure narration throughout. We are pleased to welcome special guest guides Claudia Herasme (Chief Urban Designer NYCDCP) and Michael L. Marrella AICP (Director of Waterfront and Open Space Planning).
