NYC is at a pivotal moment with an opportunity to dramatically change its approach to correctional facilities. There is emerging political consensus that the existing jail complex at Riker’s Island is not a sustainable approach. What happens next must embrace a holistic and humane approach to the larger justice system. With growing support from the City’s highest elected officials to implement real change, this event will explore what that vision could be.

The panelists are an esteemed assembly of leaders on the matter of justice in NYC representing corrections, courts, and city administration. Presentations and discussions will include: an overview of best practices for correctional facility planning and design, what plans to close Riker’s Island have been previously attempted, the vision in the recently published Independent Commission on New York City Criminal Justice and Incarceration Reform, and insights into the current plans by NYC for the future of the jail system and facilities.

Presented by the AIANY Architecture for Justice Committee, this event promotes the committee’s goals to improve the planning, built environment, operational performance, and cultural value of justice facilities, and to inspire a high level of aspiration for the design of these buildings.

Speakers:
Elizabeth Glazer, Director, Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice
Martin Horn, John Jay College of Criminal Justice; Executive Director, New York State Sentencing Commission; former Commissioner of Corrections and Probation for the City of New York
Judge Jonathan Lippman, former Chief Judge of the State of new York and the New York Court of Appeals; Chair, Independent Commission on New York City Criminal Justice and Incarceration Reform
