Founded in 1980, the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) is dedicated to preserving and presenting the history, heritage, culture and diverse experiences of people of Chinese descent in the United States. Designed by artist and designer Maya Lin, MOCA previously housed a machine shop and fulfills LEED SILVER certification requirements. Its current 14,000-square-foot space opened in September 2009 with renovations that allow MOCA to feature multiple exhibition galleries, an education and research center, and a flexible space for multidisciplinary public programs and events. MOCA is uniquely situated in the heart of lower Manhattan, bridging the cultural divide between the traditional and historical Chinatown and Lower East Side and the new contemporary art worlds of SoHo and Nolita.
