The Culture of Security in the New Age of Educational Planning

The Culture of Security in the New Age of Educational Planning will focus on emerging strategies in educational planning to protect schools while maintaining welcoming environments. Through case studies and group discussion, the panel will try to reveal principles for improved school security without sacrificing open environments that foster teaching and learning. 

Sandy Hook Primary School chronicles a sad tale of security breach with tragic results. Security consultant, Ducibella, Ventor and Santore, and architects, Svigals + Partners, share the new, completed school in suburban Connecticut designed in response to the tragedy. There will also be examples of NYC urban schools, either in design or recently completed, that exemplify the delicate balance between a welcoming and secure environment.

The remainder of the session will be devoted to a discussion format. All attendees will be encouraged to share their own experiences in educational planning to expand on these design opportunities. The goal is to open the dialogue on how best to create secure schools by employing design strategies that go beyond the realm of security hardware and devices to include concepts that prevent our schools from becoming fortresses.
