AIANY Lunch & Learn: The Architecture of Goodwill

In this two-part Lunch & Learn workshop, AIANY members will hear from practitioners whose work serves people and communities with limited resources to commission professional design services.

In the first part (Parts 1-4 on video), speakers will present pre-recorded video-conversations with colleagues and clients to share their designs, knowledge, and stories working for non-profit organizations. Moderator Duo Dickinson, Duo Dickinson Architects, and guest speakers Paul Bailey, Paul B. Bailey Architect; Bill Casey, Habitat for Greater New Haven; and Karin Patriquin, Patriquin Architects, will discuss how their firms balance their time between high-end residential and large-scale housing and commercial commissions with restricted-budget and small-scale commissions that serve the needs of the underprivileged, such as shelters for the homeless, housing for Habitat for Humanity, and restorations/adaptive re-use projects for non-profits. Dickinson, Bailey, and Patriquin will each share their experiences promoting pride of place in the communities they serve by presenting  examples of the work that they are most proud of.

In the second part (Part 5 on video), Dickinson will lead a roundtable discussion on the value, methods, and means of providing community-focused services and pursuing projects that put people over profits. Audience members will be able to participate in discussions with the three industry leaders in virtual breakout rooms where they can ask questions, seek advice, and share their own knowledge about and experiences in the pursuit of building goodwill through their work.

About the Speakers:
After graduating in 1972 from the Yale School of Architecture, Paul Bailey launch his private practice in 1990, quickly developing a reputation for high-quality design work in the areas of master planning for municipal, religious, and non-profit organizations, multi-family housing, the renovation and restoration of historic structures and single-family residences. Bailey’s firm has been awarded over 40 prestigious national architecture awards in recognition of its design work, its high regard for the special needs of individual clients, and its respect for historic context and setting.

As of 2004, William Casey has served as Executive Director at Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven. Casey served as construction manager for the organization from 1995. 

Karin Patriquin is a graduate of the University of Waterloo and McGill University, with advanced studies at NYU’s Schack Institute of Real Estate and McGill’s School of Management. She is the Principal of Patriquin Architects, an award-winning firm based in New Haven, CT, with a strong commitment to the power of excellent design. With a broad range of experience in institutional, commercial, and residential projects, Partriquin brings innovation and sustainability to all of her projects. She is a Fitwell Ambassador, a Certified Passive House Consultant, and chair of the Design Review Committee in Guilford, CT.

After graduating from Cornell in 1977, Duo Dickinson opened his own architectural practice in 1987. His work has received more than 30 awards, including the Architectural Record House Award, Metropolitan Home Met Home Awards, and AIA Connecticut and AIA New York design awards. Overall, 20 to 30 percent of the ongoing work in his office is dedicated to pro bono or at-cost work for not-for-profits, totaling over 75 projects for over 30 organizations over the last 30 years.
