Happy Hour: Honoring the 2021 Women Fellows

Join the AIANY Women in Architecture Committee for our sixth annual event to honor the recently elevated women Fellows for 2021. We are going in-person this year at the Cosentino showroom!

This is an informal event for architects and designers to connect with AIANY members who have earned the distinction of FAIA for their significant contributions to architecture and society. Recently elevated Fellows will talk about their path to fellowship, share valuable advice on how to get there, and provide insights as leaders in our profession. Space is limited. We look forward to seeing you there!

About the Honorees:
Hilary Kinder Bertsch, FAIA, has expertise in the design of large-scale mixed-use developments, with a special focus on urban retail complexes, transit centers, and waterfront developments. Her work transforms and revitalizes urban sites around the country, creating vibrant new settings authentic to local context and history.

Laura Ettelman-Gunter, FAIA, oversees the design, planning, and construction of a diverse range of projects across the globe, including in the aviation and transportation, healthcare, research, higher education, and the civic and government sectors. Ettelman-Gunter is also one of three partners on the Executive Committee, working collaboratively to guide the future of the practice.

Karen Fairbanks, FAIA, is a founding partner of Marble Fairbanks Architects, a design-driven, research-based practice recognized for their work with cultural and institutional clients. Throughout the development of her practice, Fairbanks has simultaneously built the architecture department at Barnard College, Columbia University, where she is the Claire Tow Chair Professor of Professional Practice and Chair of the Architecture Department and Faculty Director of the Design Center.

With over 14 years of experience, Pascale Sablan, FAIA, has worked on a variety of projects around the world. She is the 315th living African-American, woman registered architect in the U.S. Sablan is an activist architect who works to advance architecture for the betterment of society, bringing visibility and voice to the issues concerning women and BIPOC designers. She is the founder of Beyond the Built Environment, an organization positioned to address the inequitable disparities in architecture. Sablan was awarded the 2021 AIA Whitney M. Young. Jr Award for her advocacy efforts and ascended to the AIA College of Fellows, the youngest African American to reach that honor. In 2020, she was voted President-Elect of the National Organization of Minority Architects, the fifth woman to hold this position of leadership.

Hilary Sample, FAIA, is the IDC Professor of Housing Design and Sequence Director of the Core Architecture Studios at Columbia GSAPP and Co-Founder of the New York-based architecture and design studio MOS. Sample is an architect, writer, and educator who, through designing skillful forms in buildings and developing creative, defining books, synthesizes professional practice with architectural academia in a realized award-winning, playful, and diverse body of work.

Proof of vaccination is required for entry (as per city guidelines) and will be checked at the door. Masks are optional.
