This program is the third in the “Post-COVID Cities” series, hosted by the AIANY Planning and Urban Design Committee and the AIANY Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. “Framework for Opportunity” will recast lessons learned in after 9/11 by examining the New York New Visions initiative, identifying present-day opportunities for a post-COVID planning framework for outreach, coordinated advocacy, and partnerships.

Societal vulnerabilities brought to the fore by COVID-19 amplified calls for the design and planning community to advance longstanding advocacy issues in the built environment, including climate action, transit and public realm equity, and housing justice.

At the twenty-year mark since the 9/11 tragedy, after which the heart of lower Manhattan was rebuilt, we stand at a new moment of inflection, one characterized by administrative transitions, national investment in infrastructure, and a global reckoning with climate change. It is a moment to rise to the disciplinary challenges required to counteract climate change and unlock the potential of under-resourced and marginalized communities.
