Piet Oudolf has long been at the forefront of the Dutch Wave and New Perennial Style movements in garden design. His style embraces loose, romantic plantings inspired by nature, but it also exhibits a multi-layered density that simultaneously makes the most impact in finite spaces. Ecological concerns are a focal point of his work, which is why he eschews short-lived annuals in favor of perennials that offer visual interest throughout all seasons.

Over the course of his 35-year career, Piet Oudolf has built dozens of private, corporate, and public gardens throughout the world, including the renowned High Line in New York, Lurie Garden at Millennium Park in Chicago, and, most recently, Oudolf Field for Hauser & Wirth in the UK.

Hummelo (Monacelli, 2021) presents the evolution of Oudolf’s work, beginning and ending with his own garden near the village of Hummelo. Once an essential stop for touring horticulturalists and designers, his garden is now closed to visitors, making this book a unique and essential visual record of Oudolf’s private refuge.

Speakers:
Piet Oudolf, Garden and Landscape Designer
Noel Kingsbury, Garden Writer and Author
