Join AIANY and Classic Harbor Line as we celebrate Earth Day on this special in-person tour exploring innovative efforts to restore the Harbor’s historically abundant marine life, while also expanding vital “working waterfront” infrastructure. Guests will hear accounts of the abundant marine life documented by 17th century explorers and learn how subsequent settlement patterns and resource overuse led to the estuary’s decline. Today’s ecological goals, including efforts to rebuild native oyster habitat and create sanctuaries for migratory fish and waterfowl, embody a renewed commitment to restoring native ecology along our shared urban shoreline.

Highlights will include:
  • Overview of New York Harbor’s past, present and future
  • Your guide will delve into a range of historic and recent “working waterfront” operations located side by side with new public access piers and parks.
  • Key waterfront sites include: Battery Park City, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Buttermilk Channel, Governors Island, Gowanus Bay, Sims Metal Recycling, the Brooklyn Army Terminal, Owl’s Head Wastewater Treatment Plant, Staten Island’s waterfront development, Bayonne Golf Club, Global Container Terminal, Robbins Reef Lighthouse, Weeks Marine and Liberty State Park
  • The challenges facing NYC aquatic species, inlculuding oysters, striped Bass, shad, sturgeon, and myriad waterfowl
  • A discussion of multi-pronged efforts to improve health by lowering carbon emissions, water pollution and reducing solid waste volume.
  • How NYC is addressing sea level rise and frequent storm events with resilient waterfront planning.

This special tour will be hosted by AIANY guide Arthur Platt, AIA. This is a live, in-person event.
