Green Cities 2021: New York City

The Consortium for Sustainable Urbanism is a New York-based not-for profit organization formed to promote a better understanding of the role of sustainable urbanization and resilient design in the planning of our cities. CSU advocates for responsible and enlightened planning and design. The focus of the CSU is on replicable ideas and concepts, best practices, and speculative proposals. To connect global thought leaders, architects, urban designers and activists, the CSU has initiated a monthly lecture series on green cities, which will take place on the first Thursday of each month, starting at 12:00 pm EST. This session will feature Daniel Zarrilli, New York City’s Chief Climate Policy Advisory and OneNYC Director.

About the speakers: 

As New York City’s Chief Climate Policy Advisor and OneNYC Director, Daniel Zarrilli is preparing America’s largest city for the future and delivering on New York City’s Green New Deal. Under Zarrilli’s leadership, New York City recently released its newest long-term strategic plan, OneNYC 2050, which includes bold new actions to confront our climate crisis, achieve equity, and strengthen our democracy, demonstrating what a Green New Deal looks like in action. Since 2013, he has positioned New York City as the global leader in the fight against climate change. Notable successes include launching a comprehensive $20 billion climate adaptation program, aligning the city’s GHG reductions with the 1.5C target of the Paris Agreement, committing to divest the City’s pension funds from fossil fuel reserve owners and invest billions into climate solutions, suing fossil fuel companies for the damage caused by climate change, reaching a firstof-its-kind agreement with FEMA to provide new climate-smart flood maps, and delivering on Mayor de Blasio’s groundbreaking 2015 OneNYC resilience strategy, which for the first time incorporated equity into New York City’s sustainability efforts.

Lance Jay Brown is President and founding Board Member of the Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization. Born in Brooklyn, Brown previously taught at Princeton, was educated at the Cooper Union and holds two master’s degrees from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) and former Chair and Director of the Spitzer School of Architecture, City College of New York.

He was the 2014 President of the AIA New York Chapter, holds the title of Distinguished Professor for Life Emeritus from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), and received the coveted AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education. Brown was the co-founder of the AIANY Design for Risk and Reconstruction Committee. He has been a UN-HABITAT III Policy Unit 8 member and 2016 Quito presenter. Brown was a two-term Board Member of the Beverly Willis Architectural Foundation and is a founding Advisory Board Member of the NYC Architecture Biennial. He has edited and authored numerous books and consults, teaches, and lectures nationally and internationally.
