Continuing our Fireside Chat series, the program will examine how we can meet the demands of our low-carbon future will require a new focus by project teams on an integrated process. Green building advocates have long argued for a more fluid and iterative workflow for design professionals, arguing that this would produce more effective projects. As increasingly stringent energy codes and landmark legislations like Local Law 97, NYC’s carbon emissions limit law, force project teams to reconsider legacy processes, these desires may be turning into a reality.

Join the Integration Series via AIANY Committee on the Environment, ASHRAE New York, and the Building Energy Exchange for a sweeping discussion of how engineers, architects, and sustainability consultants can work together in a more integrated fashion. At what points in the process is tightly coordinated work the most critical? What tools can teams use to facilitate this integration? How do we educate owners on the need for this more integrated process, which may imply increased costs in early design? These questions and more, including selections from the audience, will be discussed by our esteemed panel.

About the speakers:

Sydney Mainster brings over 16 years of professional and academic architecture, design, and construction experience to The Durst Organization. As Director of Sustainability, her primary role is to support the company leadership’s vision for sustainability in ground-up development projects, existing building renovations, and building management. Mainster works closely with design consultants, construction teams, and manufacturers to ensure that product selection, procurement, and installation all meet established performance and sustainability criteria—not only to achieve outcomes on current building projects, but also to improve environmental standards and innovation in the industry at large.

Lois Arena, Director of Passive House Services at Steven Winter Associates, possesses over 25 years of experience in the building science field and has extensive experience with new and existing buildings. She holds both US and International Passive House consultant certifications and is currently consulting on some of the largest and most difficult Passive House projects in the world. Arena has co-authored and presented training programs about energy-efficient building practices to professionals in all sectors of the building industry and is regularly invited to present at conferences and private firms around the world to discuss the benefits of and roadblocks to Passive House adoption. 

At Payette, Andrea Love works across projects to bring rigor to the performance of projects. She integrates performance modeling tools into Payette’s design process at the very beginning to inform and push designs. Additionally, she leads a number of internal research projects and was the Principal Investigator on the 2012 AIA Upjohn Research Initiative-funded “Thermal Performance of Facades,” a project focused on thermal bridging. She also leads the firm’s efforts on the AIA 2030 Commitment, tracking and benchmarking the performance of projects across the firm. Love received a Master of Science in Architecture Studies in Building Technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she was the recipient of the Tucker-Voss Award and focused her thesis on the thermal performance of facades.

Dan Nall has been involved in energy efficiency in buildings since 1977 and has authored numerous papers in professional and technical journals. His specialties include energy efficient and water conservation, integrated design, and computer simulation of buildings. Among his many accomplishments, Nall is a Professional Engineer, a Fellow of the AIA, a LEED Fellow, an ASHRAE Fellow, an ASHRAE certified Building Energy Modeling Professional, a certified High Performance Building Design Professional, and a Certified Passive House Consultant.
