In September 2020, AIA New York’s Board of Directors adopted a position statement to shift the architecture profession’s involvement in the design of detention facilities under the current criminal justice system. Among the action items outlined in the statement was the relaunch of the AIANY Architecture for Justice Committee, “to increase focus on large-scale justice issues.”

At the Architecture for Justice: Open Forum held on January 25th, topics that emerged from group exercises included social justice, kindness, mental health, and design justice. Spaces that were centered ranged from the street, schools, and public spaces to courts and safe spaces. P articipants in the upcoming meeting will explore initiatives and collaborators that can engaged these topics. We invite all those interested in the topics to join us in defining steps our newly envisioned Architecture for Justice Committee should prioritize.

We strongly encourage our members to participate in this event. If you cannot attend but would be interested in participating when the committee begins meetings, have ideas to share in advance, or have additional questions about the future of this effort, please email membervoices@aiany.org.
