The deteriorating condition of the BQE beneath the Brooklyn Heights Promenade continues to be a vexing problem for the surrounding Brooklyn neighborhoods and for the City as a whole. The Mayor’s Expert Panel was established to examine the issues surrounding its rebuilding, has met with a variety of stakeholders, commissioned its own technical research, and issued a report which both stresses the imperative to move quickly and to take the opportunity to build well in the long term).

Simultaneously, volunteer members of the AIANY Transportation & Infrastructure and Planning & Urban Design Committees met for a series of interactive workshops examining the community and regional impacts of highway rebuilding, creating goals and guidelines for a solution and stressing the need to focus on the surrounding context of nearby neighborhoods and transportation networks.

In addition to the Mayor’s Expert Panel and AIANY’s reports, a recent report written by the New York City Council and Arup was released offering two approaches to fixing the BQE.

The intent of this Forum is to present and examine these reports as they complement and reinforce each other, and to set the stage for coordinated and integrated next steps, both in the short and long term.
