Event Description // Descripción del evento:
Following the 2017 hurricane season, both the informal and formal housing stocks in Puerto Rico and many countries in the Caribbean were exposed as extremely vulnerable. This interactive panel discussion will explore efforts to rebuild Puerto Rico’s housing stock, with a focus on enhancing resilience capacity in communities and preparing structures to withstand future shocks and stresses, all while advancing sustainable living. A newly released Puerto Rico housing recovery manual, assembled by a team of community leaders, educators, scientists, and experts from across many disciplines, provides detailed guidance and best practices to give a path forward for communities and stakeholders across the island. Specific recommendations for adaptation of safer sites, green and grey infrastructure, climate adaptation, building safety, protection, energy generation, and community-wide strategies will be presented by the panel through a series of case studies. These consider not just events that have occurred in the past but also the impact of climate change in the future. Opportunities to expand and build upon this guidance across the Caribbean will also be discussed, with audience participation encouraged.

Después de la temporada de huracanes del 2017, Puerto Rico y muchos países del Caribe quedaron expuestos y extremadamente vulnerables, tanto sus viviendas formales como las informales. Esta sesión interactivá estrategias para la reconstrucción de viviendas en Puerto Rico, con un enfoque en mejorar la capacidad de resiliencia en las comunidades, preparar estructuras para resistir futuros choques y tensiones, y promover la sostenibilidad ambiental. La sesión también presentará un manual de resistencia de la vivienda en Puerto Rico recientemente publicado, elaborado por un equipo diverso de líderes comunitarios, expertos multidisciplinarios, educadores, y científicos. Proporciona orientación detallada, mejores prácticas, y estrategias que detallan un plan a seguir para las comunidades isleñas. El panel presentará recomendaciones específicas para la adaptación de espacios más seguros, infraestructura verde y gris, adaptación climática, seguridad de edificios, protección, generación de energía, y estrategias comunitarias a través de una serie de estudios de casos que consideran no sólo los eventos que ocurrieron en el pasado pero también los riesgos y el impacto del cambio climático en el futuro. Las oportunidades para expandirse y aprovechar esta guía en todo el Caribe también se discutirán, invitando la audiencia.
