AIANY Women in Architecture Committee (WIA) is pleased to present Negotiation is Your Power Tool, a special workshop to improve your negotiating skills.

Would you like to become a more effective negotiator on behalf of yourself, your practice, and the architectural profession at large? Develop effective skills for negotiating with competitive people, identifying the key differences between negotiation mindsets through roleplay. Workshop attendees will gain experience in understanding both sides of the table.

Speaker:
Rosa T. Sheng, FAIA, Principal and Director of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, SmithGroupJJR; AIASF President and Founding Chair, Equity by Design Committee

Rosa T. Sheng has led a national movement for equitable practice in Architecture catalyzed by three pivotal surveys, effective workshops, and public speaking outreach both nationally and abroad. Key speaking engagements and Press of Sheng’s work with Equity by Design include Architect Magazine, Architectural Record, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Harvard GSD, TEDxPhiladelphia and KQED/NPR.

Fueled by the persistent and striking inequity of representation architectural practice, where women compose only 12–18 percent of AIA members, licensed architects, and senior firm leadership, Sheng founded Equity by Design, an AIASF committee in 2013. It has grown into a national call to action to realize the goal of equitable practice. By minimizing barriers to maximize our potential for success supports the group’s mission to retain talent, advance the profession and communicate the value of design to our communities. The 2018 Equity in Architecture Survey with over 14,900 respondents has sparked a much-needed dialogue that has resulted in sold-out symposia, hackathons and widespread media coverage of EQxD both nationally and beyond.

As a licensed architect with 23 years of experience in architecture and design, Sheng has led a variety of award-winning and internationally acclaimed projects from the aesthetically minimal, highly technical development of the glass structures for Apple’s original high-profile retail stores, to the innovative and sustainable LEED NC Gold–certified Lorry I. Lokey Graduate School of Business at Mills College in Oakland, California.
