Opening Reception for “Anne Brigman: A Visionary in Modern Photography”

Join us for the opening reception of Anne Brigman: A Visionary in Modern Photography, which rediscovers and celebrates the work of a pioneering and radical American artist. Anne Brigman (1869–1950)—a photographer, poet, and mountaineer—is best known for her iconic landscape images from the early 1900s, which depict herself and other female nudes outdoors in the Sierra Nevada. Born in Hawaii, Brigman spent much of her life in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she picked up photography at the age of thirty-two. Although the term “feminist art” was not coined until nearly seventy years after Brigman made her first photographs, she was able to redefine her place as a woman in society and establish her role as an important forerunner in the field. The first major retrospective of Brigman’s work, the exhibition was organized by the Nevada Museum of Art and curated by Ann M. Wolfe. Its presentation at the Grey Art Gallery will showcase some 115 works alongside a 400-page book published by Rizzoli Electa.
