Dear Friends of the AIANY Women in Architecture Committee,

Please join the AIANY WIA Committee for a special event, “In Dialogue With… a Mentor and a Mentee on a mutual path to advance in our profession” at our November monthly committee meeting. After our regular announcements, Maj Zaheda, Project Manager at Ware Malcomb and Nadeen Hassan, architectural designer, activist, Co-founder and Director of Primaverarch will have a candid conversation about their Mentor-Mentee relationship which began after being paired in the [Architecture] League Mentorship program. Maj (mentor) and Nadeen (mentee) will discuss what propelled them to engage in the program – their goals and expectations. They will discuss what contributes to a successful relationship, the different phases and purposes of mentorship, how to find role models/mentors, communication/self-advocacy, dealing with disappointment and setbacks, and graduating into a pandemic. We hope that their conversation will inspire all to consider becoming a mentor or a mentee and discover the invaluable friendships and support networks that develop as a result of engagement with others. The conversation will be facilitated by Rosalind Tsang, AIANY WIA Committee Advisory Board Member.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO JOIN US! We look forward to seeing you and thank you in advance for your participation and support.

Vivian Lee and Kerry Nolan AIANY WIA Committee Co-Chairs

About the Speakers:

Maj Zaheda, WELL AP, is a Project Manager at Ware Malcomb, where she oversees the construction document production and client management for several retail and corporate interiors projects. She has over 10 years of experience in both commercial and residential design and has a strong background in design, construction documentation, administration and project coordination. Apart from the variety of project types including high-end residential, retail and corporate workplace, her portfolio also includes teaching university architecture courses including studio, graphics and research.

Maj received her B.Arch and M.Arch from Virginia Tech University. She is a WELL Accredited Professional (AP) and an active member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in New York. She is engaged in various activities within her firm, as well as locally in the city. Besides visiting Art gallery openings and museums in New York city, she loves urban sketching and traveling.

Nadeen Hassan, Assoc. AIA is an architectural designer and activist who is committed to making a space for herself and others in the architectural profession. As a first-generation Egyptian-American, Nadeen recognized the unrelenting atmosphere in many parts of the world. She believes that an architect is a problem-solver that attends to the need of not one, but every group of people. Throughout her studies at the Spitzer School of Architecture at The City College of New York, Nadeen tackles subjects of inclusivity, activism, and social change within her design projects and research. Not having support at the beginning of Nadeen’s academic journey motivated her to become that network of support for the next generation. Nadeen is a co-founder and the Director of Primaverarch, a platform that offers a space for women to amplify their voice, seek advice, share their stories, or celebrate themselves and their peers.

Nadeen believes the world needs people who come from diverse backgrounds to be a part of new design revolutions; to give a voice to smaller groups who otherwise would not be heard. Through Primaverarch, Nadeen begins to initiate this change.
