The field of architectural conservation has grown more globalized, yet much of its focus has centered on the Western world. This event and discussion, based on the book Architectural Conservation in Asia: National Experiences and Practice, will offer a synoptic view of the fast-growing field of architectural conservation in Asia. The comprehensive country-by-country analysis outlined in the book—stretching from Afghanistan to the Philippines—covers many regions where architectural conservation has been understudied and addresses the traditions, challenges faced, innovation, and recent developments in architectural heritage protection practice in Asia.

Speakers:
John Stubbs, Christovich Senior Professor of Preservation Practice, Tulane School of Architecture; Author, Architectural Conservation in Asia: National Experiences and Practice
Lisa Ackerman, Previously Interim CEO, World Monuments Fund

John Stubbs is Christovich Senior Professor of Preservation Practice and former Director of the Master of Preservation Studies program in the Tulane School of Architecture in New Orleans, LA. Stubbs assumed his present position after over three decades of architectural conservation practice in New York City, including ten years as an Associate and Assistant Director of Restoration at Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners and 20 years serving as Vice President for Field Projects for the World Monuments Fund. During his time in New York, Stubbs also served as Associate Professor of Preservation at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. Since 2001, Stubbs has led a large research effort documenting the history, theory, parameters, and practice of architectural conservation in different parts of the world that has thus far yielded three books of an ongoing series.

Lisa Ackerman served as Interim Chief Executive Officer of World Monuments Fund through August 2019, after serving as the organization’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer from 2007 to 2018. Previously, Ackerman was Executive Vice President of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation and currently serves on the boards of the Historic House Trust of New York City and the New York Preservation Archive Project. She received the Historic District Council’s Landmarks Lion Award in 2007 and was named the first recipient of the US/ICOMOS Ann Webster Smith Award for International Heritage Achievement in 2008.
