Personal Exposures: Women, Architecture, and Journalism

Please join us on May 15 for a salon evening with Cathleen McGuigan, Editor in Chief of Architectural Record, and Eva Hagberg, author, educator, writer and media strategist. Both critics shape how we understand architecture, both women are active in the ongoing discussion of the social and personal costs of male domination of the profession, and both have particular interest in the works of Eero Saarinen and his relationship with Aline. Eva Hagberg is an author, educator, writer, and media strategist. Her architectural work has appeared in the New York Times, Wallpaper, Dwell, Wired, Architect, The Architect’s Newspaper, Architectural Record, and more. She holds degrees in architecture from Princeton and UC Berkeley, and a PhD in Visual and Narrative culture from UC Berkeley, where she wrote a dissertation about Aline Bernstein Louchheim Saarinen. Her debut memoir, HOW TO BE LOVED: A MEMOIR OF LIFESAVING FRIENDSHIP, out now, has been called “stunning” by the New York Times, “dazzling” by Publishers’ Weekly, and “surprisingly funny” by most readers.

Cathleen McGuigan is editor-in-chief of Architectural Record, the nation’s leading architecture publication for 125 years. Under her leadership, Record has won the Grand Neal award, the top American Business Media award for overall excellence, among numerous other editorial awards.

A former architecture critic and arts editor of Newsweek, McGuigan has a BA from Brown University and was awarded a Loeb Fellowship at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard. She has taught at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and has been a Poynter Fellow at Yale. Besides Newsweek and Record, her articles have appeared in such publications as The New York Times Magazine, Smithsonian, and Rolling Stone. She sits on the board of trustees of the Skyscraper Museum and the Center for Architecture in New York and the advisory council of the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation.
