Join the AIANY Interiors Committee for a tour of 1 Hotel, Brooklyn Bridge Park designed by INC with Marvel Architects. This structure, a visual praise poem dedicated to Brooklyn’s waterfront, overlooks Brooklyn Bridge Park, the East River, and lower Manhattan. The aesthetic of the hotel draws inspiration from contemporary Brooklyn design culture, the history of the wharf that originally occupied the site, and the natural coastal landscape as exemplified by the Park. The mission-driven 1 Hotel, Brooklyn Bridge Park is an example genuine green development, with hotel profits financing the creation of this extraordinary public park. INC and Marvel draw the park directly into the hotel by visually opening up the entire ground floor to the exterior blurring the lines between inside and out with greenery and natural materials evocative of the adjacent landscape. INC developed a site-specific, purpose-built, made-to-last aesthetic driven by smart problem solving and an expressive use of materials with a layered, easygoing hand.

Speakers:

Guido Hartray, AIA, Founding Partner, Marvel Architects
Guido Hartray has worked with Jonathan Marvel since 1997, and is a founding Partner of Marvel Architects. He has led design teams working on a wide range of projects, including Pierhouse and 1 Hotel at Brooklyn Bridge Park, the renovation and reprogramming of the Central King Building at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and streetscape redesigns for Hudson Square and Gansevoort in the Meatpacking District. Guido is dedicated to creating architecture that contributes to an environment that is greater than the individual project. Whether the context of the intervention is an urban neighborhood, a campus, or an existing building, Guido’s design strategy builds from the context to develop designs that transform their surroundings. It is the relationship that a project establishes with elements beyond its limits that makes it an exciting and engaging place to inhabit. Guido has applied this strategy to integrating infrastructure elements in urban neighborhoods as well and transformations of existing buildings. The dialogue between new and existing, project and neighborhood, infrastructure and architecture makes spaces that engage their inhabitants.

Adam Rolston, Partner, INC Architecture & Design
Adam has been engaged in the practice of architecture since 1985. He was born and raised in Los Angeles and attended Syracuse University School of Architecture where he studied both in Syracuse and in Italy under the influence of the northern Italian Rationalists. Adam has served as the Senior Designer and Project Architect for many large-scale, commercial office, residential condominium, private residential, hospitality, and retail projects in Southeast Asia, Europe and New York. He is known for his keen attention to detail, his ability to tackle the design and planning of complex projects at a variety of scales and for his careful attention to client and user needs. Adam is a registered architect in the State of New York, a member of the AIA New York chapter and the USGBC.

Drew Stuart, Partner, INC Architecture & Design
Drew Stuart has been engaged in the practice of architecture for nearly two decades. At University of Cincinnati School of Architecture, and in extensive travels to Europe and Asia, Drew developed a commitment to quality and craft. He joined Tsao & McKown Architects in 1999 where he worked for seven years before founding INC in 2006. Drew has designed and executed private residential interiors, homes, hotels, spas, restaurants and large and small residential condominium developments; all with a domestic sensibility. He possesses a particular interest in the complexities of ushering a design from conception to realization while maintaining an appropriate balance between design and constructability.

Dennis Vermeulen, AIA LEED BC+D, Director, Marvel Architects
Over a decade of experience as a visual artist and Head of Installation at the Guggenheim Museum preceded Dennis Vermeulen’s architectural training and practice. The material, social, and spatial exploration of art, as well as the technical demands of large-scale, multi-media exhibitions inform his approach to design and knowledge of fabrication and construction. Over the past ten years Dennis has applied this unique background to designing and managing residential, commercial, and institutional architecture projects in New York and abroad. Currently managing the day-to-day design and construction of Pierhouse and 1 Hotel in Brooklyn Bridge Park, he applies his knowledge to various studies and competitions for Marvel.
