Come explore surrounding New York City landmarks with instructor Robert Schaefer!

In this 2 day workshop, students will explore striking elements of city architecture and produce digital negatives from their raw captures. Participants will visit the Flatiron Building, Empire State Building, Grand Central Station and the Chrysler Building among others.

Participants take their raw captures shot in camera that day and print them on transparency film. On the second day, these negatives are used to print Cyanotypes. An overview of the cyanotype process will be demonstrated and practiced.

Students should come prepared with their own digital cameras, all other materials will be provided.

ABOUT CYANOTYPE:
Discovered by Sir John Herschel in 1842, just three years after the invention of photography, cyanotype is the photographic blueprint. Historically, engineers used this to make copies and Anna Atkins is famously known for her series of cyanotypes using plant specimen. Used in contemporary practice, cyanotype is highly versatile and can be used with fabric, canvas and even combined with other techniques such as platinum or gum bichromate.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
No prior experience is required. Attendees should have interest in learning the cyanotype process and combining this with digital methods.

TUITION INFO:
All materials are provided, but students should bring their own digital cameras.

ACCOMMODATIONS:
Participants are responsible for their own sleep accommodations.
