Foot-Candle (FC) : A unit of measurement for the density of light as it reaches a surface. The term refers to the intensity an illuminance casts on a surface by a candle flame one square foot away. This unit of measurement is commonly used in parts of the world where the United States customary units, also known as SAE units, are used. #techtuesday

Preeminent lighting designers will discuss the differences between lighting for safety and for feeling, developing a vocabulary about lit space, and the surprising ways that lighting carries symbolic meaning about the environment. Learn about what these designers pay attention to when considering the people who will be using the space, from units of analysis and measurement to deep listening and social cues.

Linnaea Tillett, PhD, is principal of Linnaea Tillett Lighting Design Associates, which she founded in 1983. An environmental psychologist as well as a lighting designer, her innovative approach incorporates a thorough understanding of the perceptual, behavioral, and psychological effects of light. The firm has built a reputation for crafting highly nuanced lighting programs, combining artistry, technical innovation, and functionality. In shaping the ambiance of a place, they look to impact not only the visual experience, but, as importantly, the felt experience. Dr. Tillett has forged multi-project collaborations with leading architects and landscape architects such as Maya Lin and Toshiko Mori, Michael Van Valkenburgh, Nelson Byrd Woltz, Gustafson Guthrie Nichol, and Olin Studio.

Ken Douglas is a principal at HLB Lighting, to which he brings his training in theatrical lighting design and more than thirty years of experience in architectural lighting design. With a particular focus in the design of signature bridges, infrastructure and public spaces, Ken’s work focuses on projects that come to express the personality of a community, town or city. Ken holds the accreditation of Lighting Certified (LC) by The National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions (NCQLP), he is a LEED® Accredited Professional with the U. S. Green Building Council, and in 2017 he was elevated to Fellow of the International Association of Lighting Designers, where he has served as the Treasurer on its Board of Directors, following two terms as a Director-at-Large. His work has received awards from The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North American (IESNA).

Nathalie Rozot, CEO, PhoScope, is a transdisciplinary designer who situated her design practice in lighting design in 2000. She founded the cleantech start-up Photic in 2008 and the think tank on light PhoScope in 2011. Rozot is the recipient of awards from the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) of North America, grants from the City of Paris, the New York State Council for the Arts, the New York State Energy Development Agency, and Parsons; fellowships from the Graham Foundation for Architecture, the MacDowell Colony, and the New York Foundation for the Arts; and sponsorships from NYFA and the Van Alen Institute. She is faculty at Parsons and was senior lecturer at Versailles and Lille’s Landscape Architecture Masters programs, and she is a former education columnist for the IES publication LD+A. She has published and lectured globally on social and critical issues in lighting and has served internationally as an academic and professional juror.

Mark Kubicki is a principal at Tillotson Design, which he joint in 2005 after fifteen years of experience in lighting design as a project manager and associate at Kugler Tillotson Associates. His experience includes a wide variety of award-winning public and private projects, many of which have been featured in national publications. Prior to his work in lighting design, Mr. Kubicki worked with architecture and space planning firms in both New York and Philadelphia. Mr. Kubicki’s experience also includes five years as a staff architect/planner for the National Park Service where he was involved with the urban development, rehabilitation, and management of urban park structures and facilities. Mr. Kubicki’s notable TDA projects include: Governor’s Island Parks and Public Spaces, NYC; the Wright Restaurant at the Guggenheim Museum, NYC; the Alessi flagship store, NYC; the Harvard Club, NYC; the Balsillie School of International Affairs, Ontario; and the Canadian Museum of Human Rights, Winnipeg.

Evie Klein in an architect and planner with expertise in the social and psychological impact of built environments in higher education and cultural institutions. She is a founding member of the User Designed Information Group (UDIG) at the Center for Human Environments. She is currently a doctoral student in Environmental Psychology, at the Graduate Center, CUNY. Her research focuses on how the social sciences can contribute to design processes. She is the co-founder of the Social Science + Architecture Committee for the AIA NY Chapter. She also serves on the Research Task Force of the AIA National Committee on Architecture for Education. Klein has taught at the Spitzer School of Architecture at City College. Prior to her doctoral studies, she was the Assistant Vice President in NYU’s Office of Strategic Assessment, Planning & Design, overseeing facilities planning and space management.
