E.1027, Eileen Gray’s acclaimed seaside house, was designed in collaboration with Jean Badovici in the 1920s. Several years later, Gray (1878-1976) designed Tempe à Pailla, a less known but equally important hillside house for her own use. Drawing from her ongoing research, 2014 LeBrun Grant recipient Jan Greben will explore Gray’s shift from collaboration to independence and will focus on the social implications of spatial configuration and economy in Gray’s work. Greben will present photographs from visits to the two houses along with archival material, including previously unpublished documents.

Jan Greben has an independent architectural practice in New York City that combines design and teaching with research. Ideas essential to the architectural work of Eileen Gray – the relationship of the building to the site and vernacular, an economy and flexibility of space, and combinations of rich and common materials – correspond to those Greben pursues in her own practice. With the crucial support of the Center for Architecture’s Stewardson Keefe LeBrun Travel Grant, Greben undertook two research trips in 2015; the first to London and Dublin, the second to Paris and Menton, France. Greben teaches a seminar on Gray’s houses at the New York Institute of Technology and is working on a forthcoming publication on Eileen Gray.
The Center for Architecture’s Stewardson Keefe LeBrun Travel Grant furthers the personal and professional development of an architect in early or mid-career through travel. Travel plans should be focused on a selected topic of interest to the individual, rather than a part of a larger humanitarian or institutional endeavor.
